More about ESF Sha Tin College

Welcome to Sha Tin College, an English medium secondary school for students of 11-18 years of age. As a member of the non-profit English Schools Foundation, Sha Tin College serves families located within the New Territories of Hong Kong and caters for students with a local and international background resulting in a multi-cultural student body with over 30 nationalities represented. For 68% of our students English is their first language. For those students whose first language is different, e.g. Cantonese (23%), they are very capable in working and learning within a curriculum delivered in English.

Year Group Stages

During the first three years of the school programme, a broad-based curriculum prepares the students for two distinct 2-year programmes – (I)GCSE in various subjects, examined by Cambridge University for ages 14-16 and the prestigious International Baccalaureate Diploma (IBDP) for the last two years of senior school.

(I)GCSE Grades

Sha Tin College prides itself in very high student academic achievement at (I)GCSE level. The percentage of examination results at A* to C grade is around 94% with 53% of all entries gaining A* or A grades.

IB Diploma Pass Rate

94% percent of our students achieved the full IB diploma and our average point score is 33.2 (out of a maximum of 45 points) compared to the world’s average of around 29.

After graduating in the final year our students gain entry to some of the best universities and colleges around the world.
Other Achievements

These achievements are quite remarkable given that we are a non-selective school (apart from the ability in English) and accept students with a wide range of ability, and some with learning difficulties or special needs. As well as performances at the highest level, we do have examples of students who have perhaps found their academic studies challenging, yet have worked hard and have tried their very best. Some of these students have surpassed expectations through sheer determinations and we are equally proud of them.

Of course, our school is not just concerned with academic success and we place great emphasis on the wide variety of extra-curricular activities, sporting competitions, cultural events and contributions to charities and service within a local, regional and world-wide context. We believe that the ‘Sha Tin College experience’ promotes a holistic, tolerant and multicultural perspective among our students in line with our mission, values and aims

Growth and Development

Sha Tin College opened in 1982 and three years later moved to its current site in Lai Wo Lane, Fo Tan with commanding views over the Sha Tin country side. From small beginnings the enrollment has steadily grown to approximately 1,200 students with nearly 100 teachers and 60 administrative and support staff. Sha Tin College today is a mature and highly successful secondary school, yet constantly strives for improvement through its strategic plan and seven goals which relate to: students; staff; curriculum and pedagogy; resourcing and financing; governance, leadership and management; community; and communication.

Accreditation

As part of quality assurance, Sha Tin College has undergone a series of review and accreditation processes which include: Council of International Schools (CIS) and Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC); IB 5-year review; ESF internal review; and ESF stakeholder surveys. These reviews and self evaluations guide and assist the school in its strategic developmental planning as well as assuring quality through rigorous accreditations.
